Mile High City

Kelsey and Joey recently went to Denver for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society Conference. Kelsey was out there from Monday to Saturday flying with Frontier Airlines direct from Knoxville, since they had such cheap airfare ($158 roundtrip), but that also means you have to fly when they fly, which isn't everyday. Since she had more time out there she was able to explore more of the area, which is why we will be hearing from her.
Leaving Knoxville
I love that the mountains provide the perfect backdrop for Denver. It is so beautiful in the evening when the sun is setting and the mountains turn blue while the skyline lights up. Which is why I love Denver, it reminds me of home while still providing the city experience. I stayed at the Hyatt Regency near the Convention Center, which I highly recommend. The bar on the 27th floor offers fantastic views of the city and the mountains, although 54 Thirty rooftop bar at neighboring Le Meridian is a lot more fun and energetic. Both are great places for a drink.

Near the convention center is the 16th Street Mall, which has some great places to eat and shop. We had tacos at Otra Vez (get the carnitas), pizza at Maggiano's, burgers from 5280 Burger Bar, American classics and the largest selection of beer (Ace Pineapple Cider is the best) on tap at the Yard House. I really enjoyed being able to walk a couple blocks and eat whatever I felt like. A few block down the road was Cheba Hut, who has the best subs ever and 3 flavors of Kool-Aid to drink. I love getting the White Widow add pineapple and to drink grape Kool-Aid. A car ride away is one of the best breakfast places I have ever been to, Snooze AM Eatery. The pancakes here are the butteriest, fluffy pancakes you will ever eat. Our table shared the cinnamon roll and pineapple upside down cakes and we just couldn't get enough. Then when all our food came it was enough to feed a small army, but everyone loved everything.

Not to far away from Denver is the Red Rock Amphitheater. My friend Savannah and I tried to go out and check it out, but when we got there a show was about to start so we couldn't go inside. It was a beautiful venue set in the mountain with great views of Denver. I would have loved to go to a concert there. The day before we went 30 Seconds to Mars performed. Since that was a fail we decided to drive around and look for a place to explore. Hoping on a scenic byway we found Lookout Mountain Park. Which climbs in elevation really quickly and provides fantastic views of Denver on one side and the Rockies on the other. Great little find while we were out exploring.

Such a great time exploring Denver, but I was so glad we rented a car and got out of the city. Check back for more about our other adventures.

Gateway to the West: St. Louis

St. Louis is a beautiful place to visit in the fall. There are so many fun historical things to do in and around the city. My favorite place to visit is St. Charles, which is about 35 minutes Northwest of St. Louis. This is like a picture perfect fall town out of a movie. The cobblestone streets lined with cute local businesses and trees changing with the season are just charming. We walked along the street checking out the local shops and tried some of their local wine. I absolutely loved the warm pumpkin wine with whipped cream at Bella Vino. This was just a quintessential fall town and I absolutely fell in love with it! And of course no trip to St. Louis is complete with out a trip to the Gateway Arch!

Rocky Mountain High

Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful! We drove through Boulder up to Estes Park to enter the park. I loved watching the scenery change from rolling hills to rocky mountain peaks. I truly enjoyed the scenic drive as we climbed in elevation up to around 12,000 feet on Trail Ridge Road. We drove for about an hour or so to Medicine Bow Curve. From there you could see snow still on the mountain peaks in the distance and the temperature dropped from 80 degrees in Boulder to about 39 degrees at our turnaround point. The mountain range was quite a sight and went as far as the eye could see. This was such a great drive, but I wish we had more time to get out and hike. I would have loved to hit the trails and see what we could accomplish on foot. Maybe next time, but until then I will be dreaming of these Rocky Mountains. So excited we made it to RMNP!
